Pont du Gard

All of the famous Provence towns and sites area all within very easy driving distance of Saint Victor la Coste. Avignon and its medieval Palace of the Popes is 25 minutes away.

Only 20 minutes away is the famous Pont du Gard, one of the best preserved Roman aqueducts in the world.

Arles, one of my personal favorites, is only an hour away - it offers so many monuments and museums, not to mention the pretty streets to walk around and lively market, that a full day isn't enough to give it all justice.

The Coliseum in Nimes

Nimes, with Roman coliseum and the "Maison Carrée", the only intact Roman temple in the world, is a 30 minute drive.

Other Roman sites abound - Orange and its spectacular Roman theater is only 20 minutes east, and within just 5 minutes of Saint Victor la Coste, two hilltop sites were important regional capitals in that early period.

Near Arles are Les Baux de Provence, Saint Rémy and the other Alpilles villages that are so typical of the region.

Uzes, the first town in France where the entire city center was declared a protected historic monument, is just to the west of here.

South is the Camargue Rhone delta region with its salt water marshes, wild bulls and horses and bird sanctuaries, and the Mediterranean. On the other side of Avignon is the Luberon region (which has itself become a bit touristy now).

Equally near are the rugged Cevennes hills, and the foothills of the Alps are visible on a clear day from the Saint Victor la Coste hillside.

Medieval monasteries, other monuments, old sections of cities and fortified villages simply abound in this region, and even a month will only give you a taste.
